Cheap Ring Lights for Portraits

Cheap Ring Lights for Portraits

A client asked if he could use his macro ring light for portraits outdoors.  It's a somewhat common question for folks who have spent good money on a macro ring light seeking to get more out of it.  In controlled indoor conditions, it can work, but the limited power of most macro ring lights necessitates very close proximity to the subject and you lose some of the look that way.  So how do we deliver the ring flash look whether indoors or outdoors and make it work?

REVIEW : MAGMOD - Real Innovation in Speed Light Modifiers

REVIEW : MAGMOD - Real Innovation in Speed Light Modifiers

When speed lights aka hot shoe flash became easier to use, we started to see the advent of light shaping tools for speed lights.  These took two forms, the first being relatively portable and directly mounting to the speed light, and those that were downsized from their strobe origins to allow speed lights to be used in ways similar to a strobe, albeit with less power.

Another Reason I Spend My Money on Profoto Gear

Another Reason I Spend My Money on Profoto Gear

No matter what level of photographer we are, the cost of gear is a reality that we face.  Most vendors roll over the models with great frequency in the hopes of getting upgrade dollars, when in most recent cases, there has not been a lot of value add to make the upgrade viable.  Profoto takes a different approach by increasing the value of the gear you already have.  How?  Read on.

REVIEW : Broncolor Move 1200 L Studio Flash System

REVIEW : Broncolor Move 1200 L Studio Flash System

The Broncolor Move system is a special case type of studio and field strobe system.  It is a power pack based system, but the power pack uses a rechargeable lithium ion battery.  It's small and compact, but it uses Broncolor's MobiLED strobe heads, heads designed to be used with much larger AC based systems.  Lastly it packs a lot of power, 1200 joules to be used asymmetrically between two heads.  There are alternatives in this space, but I thought you might be interested in learning more about the Move 1200L and to see why, if portability, power, consistency and speed are part of your use case, a Move system may be the answer for you.

REVIEW : MOLA Softlights - The Best I Have Ever Used

A beauty dish is a wonderful light shaping tool.   Using one well takes a fair bit of practice from a positioning perspective, but once you build the skill, there is no other light shaper like a good beauty dish.  Some manufacturers such as Profoto refer to these light shapers as soft lights.  In this review I look at the absolutely awesome MOLA softlight line

REVIEW : Broncolor PARA 133

REVIEW : Broncolor PARA 133

Broncolor is a well respected name in professional studios around the world.  The Swiss manufactured products have earned their reputation for quality and consistency.  They tend to be priced accordingly but this doesn't mean that Broncolor gear is for high end pros only.  Photographers seeking top line equipment that is reliable, highly usable and robust should always take Broncolor into consideration.  I want to thank Canadian distributor Amplis Foto for making the unit available for this review.

My Day With Peter Hurley

My Day With Peter Hurley

On March 24th, 2016 I got to spend the day with Peter Hurley.  Thousands of people have done so in classes and workshops, and I count myself as fortunate for having done so, but yesterday was different and special.  Peter was in Toronto to deliver his Illuminating the Face workshop presented by Henry's Learning Labs, and I had the honour and pleasure to both introduce Peter to the attendees and to help with the setup and assist him over the course of the day.  It was really quite amazing.
